HOW TO FACILITATE HYBRID DANCE CLASSES

At BAMDance we offer a live stream option for all our classes in order to increase accessibility and inclusion for everyone. After running “hybrid” classes since 2020 we now feel confident sharing our tips for those who want to do the same!

1. Be prepared

Dedicate enough time to set up the live stream each class. We notice that when our teachers are rushed and disorganized our online students bear the greatest brunt. Unintentionally our online students can feel like a 2nd priority to our in person students when teachers are trying to do too many things at once ie. Say hi to the in-person dancers whilst getting the live stream organised. Arrive a few minutes early to set up and welcome online participants, ensuring they feel included.

2. Be reliable

Keep the lesson plan & flow of activities consistent & repeatable. We find our students are much more engaged online when they feel safe with the class structure and activities. Because they aren’t able to receive the full energy of the in-person students this can sometimes create uncertainty and worry. If students know what to expect, they understand the order of activities and they know how to participate, they’re more likely to stay on task. Avoid switching up the plan too often.

3. Be energized

Keep your energy high and encourage your online students to do the same. Your students will read and imitate your energy. If you’re giving more energy to your in-person students they’ll feel it. This creates room for distraction and disengagement. Be excited for your online students. Use varying degrees of proximity to the screen, tone and volume of your voice, consistently refer to them and have fun as the teacher!

4. Be attentive

Don’t forget your online students and continuously check in. Use your students names so they know you’re consistently watching them. Come close to the screen and cheer your online students on. Whilst your in person students are getting a drink, come and check in with the online dancers so they are feeling your leadership care. Regular check-ins help keep students engaged throughout the entire class.
